Odd One Out

Baby animals

Activity overview

15 mins
Ages 5 – 7

Science topics:

Animals, including humans , Living things and their habitats

Put your class' observation skills to the test with these three fun animals. This activity is great for promoting observation and discussion skills.

Run the activity

1. Show the three images above and ask everyone to come up with as many similarities and differences as they can. If they get stuck, prompt them to think about:

  • appearance
  • what they do
  • where they might be found

2. Then, everyone needs to decide which one is the odd one out and why. Encourage a reason for every answer and there is no wrong answer!

Background science

The baby duckling is a bird, an animal covered in feathers that lays hard eggs. The lamb is a baby sheep and the calf is a baby elephant. Elephants and sheep are both mammals, which means their mothers produce milk for them when they are young.

Take it further

Not all baby animals resemble their adult parents. Children could match the baby animal to their parent using this game or you could make a pairs game for children to play in the classroom.  Watch our What's Going On? activity which shows a butterfly emerging. You can also show your class this video of tadpoles swimming in the water and discuss with them what is happening.
