Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do I access Explorify’s activities?

Explorify's activities are available to enrolled users for a ten-activity introductory programme currently running every school term (accommodating regional differences in timing as much as we can). Once you have marked ten activities as complete (from a wide selection suitable for all primary ages) on the site you will have access to all our activities. Sign up, and we’ll either add you to the current programme.

You need to be an enrolled user to access Explorify's activities. You know if you're an enrolled user because you would have been asked to create a password and some other questions about your school's address and favourite subjects to teach.

If you think you have signed up but are having problems accessing activities, then please contact us.

What if I want access to the activities but don’t want to follow the ten-activity programme?

Taking part in the programme gives you access to the activities and allows us to get feedback on activities and understand the impact of the programme too. The programme is designed to embed this new way of thinking into your class and allow you to see progression and improvements in their discussion and thinking. We've got lots of feedback from teachers to try to make the site as easy as possible to use.

What equipment will I need?

Explorify is an online programme that is built as a series of web pages with prompts and guidance on email, so an internet connection through a computer, tablet, laptop or mobile is essential for your preparation, as well as an email account. Many of the activities don’t require anything in the classroom, as they are discussion-based. For some activities, you’ll need a way to show videos and images. Some may require you to source everyday items, like a newspaper or a leather shoe.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. Explorify is totally free and always will be.

Explorify is funded by Wellcome, a global charitable foundation. Wellcome's education team are working to ensure that all pupils in the UK have access to a world-class inspiring and relevant science education by supporting education research, professional development and primary science. How does Explorify work with BBC Terrific Scientific?

Terrific Scientific is a teaching resource that aims to engage pupils aged 9-11 years with monthly investigations linked to the curriculum with accompanying live lessons via the BBC website. Explorify's activities are complementary to these investigations and will link via the curriculum topics of Terrific Scientific, supporting bridging between lessons, getting discussion started or assessing pupils' knowledge at the end of an investigation.

I'm enrolled but I don't have a Facebook account, can I still take part in the Explorify staff room?

We are only running our “staff room” in Facebook which is where we will show some exclusive content and allow teachers to ask the Explorify team and each other questions (and sometimes we need feedback from you). Setting up a Facebook account is simple - www.facebook.com - and you could limit it to just your work email address and not even use a real name as long as it looks feasible (e.g. no numbers).

The activity video is not working, how I can access video?
All our videos are hosted on Vimeo from the Explorify account so first check whether you can access Vimeo at all and if not, please speak to your IT support to enable access. If this isn't the problem then please contact us.

Vimeo is working, why won't the video play?

Some of our videos are provided by the BBC and because of their rights agreements you can only view BBC videos while you're inside the UK. If you are inside the UK but receiving this message from us, this iPlayer information page has some useful guidance on how to correct your IP address.

Why haven't I received an email from Explorify?

Some of our emails are sent automatically by our systems, which some email services interpret as spam and block. In order to prevent this happening, please add "explorify@wellcome.ac.uk"  and "news@explorify-updates.org" to your email contacts. If you are still having issues, please email us from the address you would like to receive emails to.
